Trade Coffee Subscription Review

I drink a lot of coffee, and while I love to visit new coffee shops when traveling (and bring home a couple bags of beans with me), most of my coffee consumption is at home. There’s a locally focused grocer in Columbus that stocks some decent coffees, but options are great where I love, and at any rate, I love trying new coffees.

I’ve tried some pretty meh subscriptions that were more about the marketing than the coffee quality. I’m sure you know what I mean if you’re made the coffee subscription rounds as well. Old beans with no roast date, high prices that aren’t backed up by the quality of the beans. Big roasters instead of the interesting small operations.

So this is where I feel like Trade does coffee subscriptions quite a bit better. It’s not exactly cheap–good coffee rarely is–but everything I’ve tried from Trade has been freshly roasted and nearly all of it tasty.

How it Works

Whether you order beans a la carte, or sign up for a subscription, your coffee is shipped directly from the roaster. While your order is processing, they send out a cute email saying that “your coffee is now roasting.” I doubt they mean it literally, but I’ve got to say, I’ve always received super fresh beans, and the fact that it comes direct from the roaster no doubt makes that easier.

You’ll pay about the same as you would buying from the roasters directly. I tell myself that I will buy directly when I find something I want to reorder, but there’s so much to explore that the subscription is just more fun.

The curation is a big selling point for me. It feels like Trade is run by fellow coffee nerds, and I love browsing coffees and recognizing the names of coffee shops I’ve visited during my travels. As a cold brew fiend, it’s also awesome that there’s a huge section for beans that lend themselves well to cold brew.

Overall

I haven’t loved every single bag I’ve gotten, but there haven’t been any terrible picks either. It helps to have an idea of what you like–or what roasts the recipient likes if you’re ordering a gift. I still bring bags back home when traveling, but Trade has become my go-to for regular coffee purchases.
