I’m a sucker for beautiful hotels and charming Airbnbs, so I end up reading quite a few clickbait articles about the “most beautiful”, “most unique”, etc hotels. Not too many live up to that promise, and sadly, even many beautiful historic hotels end up being renovated in bland luxury. But I think I may found a real contender in the Palacio Belmonte.
Regularly appearing on lists of the worlds most beautiful hotels, and on Conde Nast’s 2015 Gold List, the 11 room Palacio Belmonte succeeds where so many other hotels fail. Each unique suite preserves the history and stunning details of Lisbon’s oldest palace, with antique decor and modern luxuries.
The Palacio was built on the surrounding walls of Lisbon’s Castle São Jorge, with the first section completed in 1449. When the current owners purchased the Palacio, it had been in the same family for 500 years, and took another 6 years of restoration before it was reborn as hotel.
This private terrace in the three level Bartolomeu de GusmãoTerrace Suite has to be one of the best views in the city!
With rates starting at around $400 a night, I might not be staying at the Palacio Belmonte anytime soon, but it’s sure to figure highly into my daydreams.
