The Deeply Creepy Costumes of Traditional European Carnivals

In addition to a career in high fashion photography, German photographer Axel Hoedt has been documenting the supremely creepy traditional carnival costumes of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The photos from his two books, Once a Year and Dusk are both fascinating and a little terrifying. While it’s clear that he’s going for an eerie tone, many of these could be plunked down in a horror movie without any tinkering from wardrobe:
