Colorful, Cartoonish South Indian Homes

These colorful, over the top South Indian homes made me smile. Located in the town of Tiruvannamalai, the vibrant houses date back to around the 1940s and the original article from Architectural Digest speculates that a local Ashram which became popular with tourists in the 1960s may have had some influence on their construction.

The avant-garde structures are believed to have influenced Italian architect and designer Etore Sottsass…leading me down another internet rabbit hole for today, and adding this weird and wonderful tome to my reading list (and plenty more here if you’re looking to expand your reading list)
